Visit to the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston, 2nd March 2011

20 children from Year 4 and The Stitches after school club enjoyed a fun packed day of creative learning at the Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston.

The visit supported the schools current creative curriculum studies where the children have enjoyed  exploring the work of abstract artists.

The Visit

·          The children worked in groups of 4 and identified ‘patterns in the museum’ which they had to locate looking ‘up, down, all around’ using photographic images. The children then actively found their own patterns and used museum cameras to record these.

·         Each child had a clipboard, a piece of A4 paper divided into 4 and a pencil.  The children had to draw patterns they liked, looking at paintings/artifacts/sculptures from the Fine Art Collection and a current exhibition from the  Post WW2  Hull Traders abstract textiles collection.

·         From these studies the children chose their favourite design and used coloured fabric crayons to translate these onto individual fabric squares.

·      The children then each made a simple block print of their designs using a piece of cardboard and cut out shapes from foam which were glued on.They then painted these in their chosen colours and printed onto paper to form a pattern.

As you can see from the images the children certainly enjoyed themselves and used their existing knowledge to explore further concepts of pattern and colour study and develop their skills of drawing and printing within this exciting environment.

As an extra treat the children also visited the fabulous fabrics exhibition called 'Embelished' where they actively took part in Question and Answer sessions about the exhibition and everyone learnt to weave!  A member of staff gave an impromptu talk about a Spitalfields silk dress from the 1800s to a small group of children who were quite captivated.

Throughout the visit the Museum staff commended the children's manners and behaviour. The front of house even commented that the uniform was 'the best' that they'd 'ever had through the door'.

A fantastic day that was enjoyed by all!!
