Policy for dealing with Bullying
Bullying is when a person is made unhappy over a period of time because he/she is hurt, teased or left out of a group. Aggressive behaviour is also considered to be bullying as it is difficult for victims to defend themselves against this.
Bullying can take many forms:
Physical: Hitting, kicking, taking belongings
Verbal: Name calling, insulting, making offensive remarks
Indirect: Spreading nasty stories about someone, exclusion from social groups,
being made the subject of malicious rumours, sending malicious emails or text messages on mobile phones
Raising awareness
- At the beginning of each academic year all class teachers go through the definitions of bullying in our policy and encourage children to speak to a member of staff if they know that bullying is occurring in the school – it is their responsibility to each other
- Each classroom displays a copy of the policy for dealing with bullying. The class teacher refers to and discusses it with the children if there is an occasion where a pupil in the class is made to feel unhappy
Implementation
- When bullying is discovered the Headteacher is informed although the class teacher deals with it initially. Children are warned that if it happens again the headteacher and parents will be involved.
- If there is a recurrence the headteacher meets with the children and explains that if there is any further bullying the parents will be sent for.
- In the event that it is necessary to involve parents they, and the child/ren, will be expected to give an undertaking at that point that it will not happen again. Otherwise children may be excluded for an agreed period.
Monitoring and Evaluation
All teaching and nonteaching staff are very much aware of our bullying policy. They make sure through observation that hurt of any kind is not going on between pupils, and if it starts that it is dealt with immediately.
Cases of bullying, or suspected bullying, are reported to the Headteacher by staff, pupils or parents. Parents who complain of bullying have their complaint investigated and are informed of the outcome. A note is taken of all instances of bullying and feedback given to the Senior Management Team at the end of each year who evaluate the effectiveness of the policy.
