History of St Joseph's

St Joseph’s Park Hill School

History

In 1954 the Sisters of Mercy opened a private school for infant and juniors at their premises in Yorkshire Street, Burnley.

In 1957 the Sisters purchased a house in Park Hill and new school premises were built next door. St Joseph’s Convent School was officially opened and blessed by the Right Rev. George Andrew Beck, Bishop of Salford on Friday 13th December 1957.

From Strength to Stength

As numbers increased, two new classrooms were added in 1967.

Sister Mary Cecelia retired as head teacher in 1974 and was replaced by Sister Mary Clement.  In 1982 the school celebrated its Silver Jubilee.

A new dining room was built in 1993, the stairway to the convent was removed and the school totally separated from the convent.

Moving On

In September 1995, Sister Mary Clement retired and was replaced by Sister Joan.

A before and after school club was opened on 15th September 1998.

On the 24th September 2002, the Nursery was opened.  Both Sir Simon Towneley and Mr Peregrine Towneley were present. Mr Peregrine performed the opening ceremony while Father Lannon blessed the Nursery.

In June 2006 the school had its first ISA, (Independent Schools Association), inspection and received an outstanding report. As a result the school was registered as a member of I.S.A. Schools.

In 2007, our Golden Jubilee Year, we will continue to provide a first class education which, to quote our mission statement, “prepares our children for the challenges of the future in a nurturing and stimulating environment built on catholic foundations.”
