Nursery looked at 'Our Environment'. We had a look around the grounds of nursery and school. We looked at the buildings, playground, field and at all the things that are growing.
We
touched different surfaces to see what their 'texture' felt like. We took lots of photographs and did lots of wax crayon rubbings.
We made a huge model of the nursery, school and grounds. The children decided which would be the best materials to use from the junk modeling resources.
Reception
In our Geography themed week we studied England. We looked at maps and where Burnley was in relation to the capital city of London. We sang songs/rhymes of London's Burning & Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat Where Have You Been? We painted English flags of St George. We discussed how to get to London by different means of transport. We painted lots of different forms of transport.
We discussed what 'the English' are famous for and the children brought in pictures of Cup of Tea, Fish & Chips, Football, Rugby, The Queen, Red Buses, Telephone boxes, Red Post boxes.
We had a fun week.
Year 2
Year 2 Studied Europe. We learned about 4 countries in Western Europe ~ FRANCE, SPAIN, ITALY and GREECE.
We found them on a map, we located the capital cities and learned about famous landmarks. We learned songs and how to say 'Hello' and 'Bye Bye'.
We tasted typical foods of the countries we studied ~ tortilla, crepes, pizza, houmous and olives ~ Yummy!!
We enjoyed Geography Week.
Year 3
Year 3 Studied the USA. We sang 'The Star-Spangled Banner' and made 'Stars and Strips' flags. We found the names of the states and looked at atlas to locate the main Geographical features of the country.
We heard about the History of the USA and enjoyed Writing the stories of Christopher Columbus, The Pilgrim Fathers and the native American Indians. In Science we found out about the Space Race and in Art we painted in the style of Andy Warhol. During our Games lesson we even tried baseball and cheerleading.
Year 4
During Geography week Year 4 studied Asia. We looked at Asia in general and identified 31 countries and their locations. We investigated the countries of India and Pakistan and the busy city of Hong Kong.
We focused on where these places are, their flags and their meanings, our first impressions of these places, what it might be like to live there, the climate, the landscape and other interesting information and artefacts that the children brought with them to the weeks lessons.
The week was very interesting and I feel the children learnt a lot. Many of our children are very well travelled.
Year 5/6
Year 5/6 studied Australia. The children brainstormed all their ideas and thoughts about the country and, from this, we decided on what aspect to study. We also discussed the location of Australia and talked about the size, climate, history and some of the most famous features and landmarks. These included Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Ayres Rock and the Great Barrier Reef.
The children read some the the Aborigine Dreamtime myths and then wrote and illustrated their own versions of these stories. They re-created Aboriginal paintings and made boomerangs and didgeridoos, which they decorated in traditional ways.
We discussed the transporting of convicts to Australia and the children created their own villains, making 'Wanted' posters and inventing dastardly crimes.
We looked at the construction of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the children re-created this using modelling materials.
Finally, we played our own version of 'The Ashes', which we decided were the most famous and important sporting event between England and Australia. The winners where presented with a small 'urn'!
The children enjoyed the week and learned a lot about he country of Australia.
