Spring Term 2008

Year 5&6 1960s Day

Year's 5 & 6 came in costume to explore life in the 1960s.  The children carried out various tasks through the day.  Firstly, the children performed their group news broadcast, reporting about an event that took place in the 60s: Aberfan; England winning the World Cup; Vietnam; 'The Great Train Robbery' and the 'Moors Murders'.

Next the pupils were entertained by a 1960s band who came into school to perform 60s hits.  Year's 5 & 6 them designed and made album covers for a 1960s band.

The children  then investigated fashion from the decade and carried out some printing activities.  The day culminated with a Top of the Pops where children performed a 60s song.  The no1 hit was 'Do Wah Diddy Diddy' by Manfred Mann - performed by St Joseph's (The Cool Dudes).

Year 6

Burnley Express

Year 6 were shown around the Burnley Express Office on Wednesday 16th January as part of their English topic exploring Journalism.  They were taken around the production department, photography, graphics and news areas.  The children chatted with reporters and enjoyed their morning.

Sally Dahmke, one of the leading editors spoke to the children about writing news reports and articles.  She gave advice about journalistic techniques and devices.

The Year 6 class were given headlines that will appear in the forthcoming editions of the Burnley Express and they will now write their own reports using the headlines and advice provided.

Year 6 2007/2008

Anti-Bullying Week

Year 5 & 6 took part in Injustice Week and performed a presentation on the theme of Bullying. The children began by looking at visuals of children who had been victimised by bullies (they had suffered an injustice) and observed children who had victimised others (they caused an injustice).  The images were presented as a Power Point demonstration on the Interactive Whiteboard and were accompanied by appropriate music.  The children discussed and showed reasons why people bully using posters.  The class then read out poems exploring bullying and these were mimed as a choreographed dance by a group of pupils to fit alongside the words and meanings of the poems.  The presentation concluded with the class reading out bidding prayers, which spelt out the work JUSTICE.

The presentation was performed in front of 4 judges from Burnley Magistrates Court,

The children are now going to complete in the final of Injustice Week against other schools in the North West.

Here's a poem written by Fern on the topic of Bullying.

The Bullies

Bullies are cowards, bullies are weak

They worry you and pester you,

and stop you going to sleep

Bullies have no friends and they think it is the latest trend

to pain you, hurt you and abuse you, too.

Bullies are like sheep,

one leads, the others follow.

And make you feel the greatest sorrow.

I used to think bullies were cowards,

that bullies were weak.

But now it's happened to me,

I'm not sure...................................

Year 6 have been writing poetry for a class Poetry Day competition.  The winning poem was by Fern.

Dreamer

Dreamer of dreams, Listen…….

Dreams, Funny things.

They run on legs, or float on wings.

Light dreams and heavy dreams, and fluffy dreams, like clouds.

Nasty dreams, horrid dreams, dark dreams like shrouds.

Dreams you wish you would never wake up from,

dreams to hold and dreams to squash juice from.

Dreaming about cars, going up hill.  Dreams about horses, taking cough pills.

Cough syrup and shrimps, all made out of leather.

And dreaming strange dreams about being a sheep eating heather.

All of a sudden I wake up and GASP……….

Year 5/6 2007/2008

The following pictures of Year 6 children were taken at Burnley Central Library. The display shows work produced by both Year 5 & 6 for Black History Month.  The exhibition of children's work contains timelines, art work and money notes.  This display will be shown throughout the month of October.

On Tuesday 9th October Year 5 & 6 participated in an Anglo-Saxon Day, which linked to their History topic for the term.  The children carried out investigations and creative tasks, including exploring and making Anglo-Saxon jewellery, costumes and pottery.  The pupils also experimented with Anglo-Saxon writing and made a class village with huts that they had built in pairs.  The children particularly enjoyed the Anglo-Saxon Feast at playtime, testing some of the foods that may have been consumed during the Anglo-Saxon era.  The pupils had even made thier own butter!!

The tiring day was a great success.  The children and staff, Mrs Fulforth, Miss Ackroyd and Mrs Welsby, enjoyed their learning and got a lot out of the day.
